Acupuncture for Headaches
A “cervicogenic” headache is simply a headache caused by the joints and muscles of the neck and upper back. It is the most common type of headache; however, it is often completely ignored by most of the medical profession. The joints and muscles of the neck and upper back become inflamed and irritated, causing pain in the head. In other cases, this type of headache also occurs after a car accident (known as the “whiplash headache”). Using a combination of Chiropractic and Acupuncture treatment, patients will see headache pain subside significantly.
Acupuncture for Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical treatment in today’s society. It can be a result of nerve and muscular damage, degenerative disc disease, and arthrittis as well as many other ailments. Fortunately, Chiropractic and Acupuncture medicine have a long history of helping to alleviate this pain. The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society say doctors should consider acupuncture as therapy for patients with persistent chronic low back pain. It is believed that the benefits from acupuncture are a result of stimulating the central nervous system, which releases certain chemicals, such as endorphins and opioids, into the muscles, spinal cord and brain that help alter the perception of pain.
Acupuncture for Arthritis
Arthritis simply means inflammation of the joints. There are two types of Arthritis: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is characterized by degeneration of articular cartilage, and rapid bone growth at the synovial membranes of joints throughout the body. These actions lead to deformities in the bone and joint cavities, which commonly results in pain with everyday activity. Rheumatoid arthritis is different in that it is characterized as inflammation to the bones and joints caused by an immune system attack on the joints, resulting in painful joints with decreased range of motion.
Both types of arthritis are common problems for many Americans, especially those individuals age 60 or older. Not only does it interfere with daily routines once it sets in, but it progressively worsens as one ages. The reason arthritis affects so many people to such a severe degree is that there are very few effective treatments for it. For the most part, patients are given anti-inflammatory drugs. When these do not work, surgery and joint replacement are the next option. Those inflicted with arthritis are offered limited help with symptoms, and very few treatments to stop the diseases’ progression.
What role could Acupuncture treatment play in helping arthritis? Acupuncture can increase blood circulation to joints, and thus their absorption of calcium. It can also remove any toxins in the body that could be aiding in the pain. Acupuncture treatments can eliminate symptoms of arthritis and slow down the progression of the disease with no side effects associated with taking prescription medication.
