There are many types of spinal disc injuries (also known as herniated discs, slipped discs, or disc protrusions) that don’t only cause pain in the areas near the spine, but also in many other areas of the body. This is due to the fact that there are a total of 23 discs in the spine- 6 in the neck, 12 in the mid-back, and 5 in the lower back. The type of pain you experience due to the disc injury will depend on where the injury has occurred. For instance, if you have an injured disc in your neck, then you could experience pain in your shoulder, arm, and/or fingers. If you have a disc injury in your mid back, then you could experience pain in your upper back, chest, and/or stomach. If you have a disc injury in your lower back (the most common location), then you will experience pain in your lower back along with pain, tingling, and/or numbness in one of your legs.
Generally, if you are experiencing back pain, it is most likely due to a disc injury. However, the pain can be effectively treated through acupuncture therapy. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms we mentioned above or any of the following symptoms, you could find relief through acupuncture therapy:
· Pain and/or numbness on one side of the body
· Pain that extends to your arms and/or legs
· Pain that increases at night
· Pain that increases after sitting or standing
· Pain when walking short distances
· Unexplained muscle weakness
· Tingling, aching, or burning sensations in the affected area
You do not have to experience these symptoms any longer. Acupuncture has shown to decrease the effects of a disc injury and ultimately decrease the pain caused by it. For long-lasting results it is a much more practical option than pain killers or anti-inflammatories that will only provide short term relief.
