Oriental Medicine is a complete system of medicine that has been refined, and used clinically for well over 3000 years. It includes a wide variety of modalities such as acupuncture, herbology, nutrition, medical chigong, moxibustion, and general lifestyle counseling. It is one of the world’s oldest systems of medicine, and continues to be very useful in the treatment of numerous ailments and modern day diseases or imbalances. Oriental Medicine has it’s own set of diagnosis patterns that are completely different than that of the standard westernized allopathic model of medicine that is practiced by many today.
Oriental Medicine excels at treating the root and the branch of a disease. The root can be considered the underlying cause of the ailment, while the branch can be considered the symptoms. All disease can be seen as a lack of balance between organ systems, tissues, and fluids. Oriental Medicine strives to restore the physiological functioning of these systems, and brings them back into homeostasis.
What is Chinese Herbology?
Chinese Herbal medicine is the science of combining 2 or more medicinal substances into a formula to create a prescription designed to treat a specific diagnostic pattern. There are currently over 1000 substances used in the Chinese Materia Medica. Each herb has it’s own specific property (taste, temperature, function). These herbs combined together typically balance each other to achieve results. The source of these herbs is a big concern, especially recently with China getting a bad reputation in the media, due to some contaminated food products. All of our herbs are purchased from the US. Mainly 2 companies are used. Kamwo is the 1st company, and it is one of the biggest Chinese Herbal pharmacies in the US. This is the main company that we use for custom herbal prescriptions. Kan Herb company in California is the 2nd company that we use. We typically use the Kan brand for the premixed patent traditional formulas that we may keep in stock.
What is ChiGong?
Chigong can be simply translated to mean energy work. Medical Chigong is the practice of specific movements, breathing, and focusing intention, in order to regulate the body to restore and maintain health. PanguShenGong (PGSG) is the particular type of Chigong that is taught at Atlantic Wholistic Associates. PGSG has been chosen because it can be practiced by almost anyone, with or without athletic ability. It is generally easy to learn, and excels at producing almost immediate health benefits. Many can feel the changes taking place in their body with the very first time they practice the method. PGSG works on the concept that most disease can be explained as a lack of universal chi, and by taking in more chi, and circulating this chi to every area of the body, we can achieve great benefits regarding our personal health. Medical Chigong can therefore be seen as a type of self health care.

What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is the science of burning mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris), on or near the acupoints, or specific regions of the human body. It can be used to warm, dry, or stimulate an area. It can be used in conjunction with acupuncture, or as a stand alone therapy. It is typically effective for increasing circulation, drying dampness, or for moving chi around the body. Many practitioners use it to increase circulation, decrease inflammation, and relieve pain.
